FAQs:

Do Cub Scouts go camping?

You bet we do! And we have a great time doing it! We have at least one (and sometimes two) pack campouts each year. The Council also offers 2 night camps for parents & children. Once boys and girls reach the age of Webelos the Dens are allowed to do den camping as well.

Where do kids come from?

Pack 1199 draws from many local communities. You need not attend one of these schools, but please be aware that most meetings happen in the greater Germantown area. Some schools from which we draw are: Dr. Ronald McNair, Spark Matsunaga, Mary of Nazareth, Seneca Creek, Clopper Mill, and Home-schooled Children.

What is the structure of cub scouts?

Like every effective organization, Cub Scout Packs have a structure. Understanding this structure and how it works will increase your child's enjoyment of the program.

The Den

This is the primary group where the boys and girls have regular activities. Groups of 8 to 10 boys and girls meet weekly together as a Den. The members of the den get together and decide which night will be best for them to meet, and meet for approximately one hour. We strongly encourage that each den employs the “rotational leadership” method – which means that all of the parents share in the planning/leading of the meeting – this reduces the burden on any one (or two) people. Each den is led by a Den Leader and an Assistant Den Leader, and a new den cannot be formed unless 2 parents come forward and are willing to serve as the Den Leaders. In the fall, new dens are organized from boys wanting to join cub scouts. Should there not be enough scouts to create a new den, then we will make every effort to place your child with dens that are already established.

Pack 1199

The Pack serves as a "parent" organization to all of the Dens (about 7-9) and their Families. The Pack provides direction, program support and maintenance of the budget. The Pack is led by the Cubmaster who plans and directs monthly pack meetings, and the Committee Chair who is the “COO” of the pack. Pack 1199 meets monthly (usually the First Monday of the month) and for special activities.

May parents attend den meetings?

Cub Scouting is a family-based program, and we encourage parents to be involved in all aspects of their child's participation. Parents must be present for all Lion and Tiger Cub meetings (Kindergarten and First Grade children) because so many of the activities require parental support. Cub Scout activities such as camp-outs and field trips require parental attendance and supervision.

What supplies and equipment are needed to participate in Cub Scouting?

Each participant in Cub Scouting will need to purchase a Scout Uniform, neckerchief, and handbook. Additional uniform items are optional (hat, slide, pants, etc.). Scouts may wear whatever pants they like as long as they are in clean and respectable condition.
